Vietnam visa for Ecuadorian citizens: Requirement and Guide

A Vietnam visa for Ecuadorian citizens is required for ordinary passport holders traveling to mainland Vietnam. This guide explains the exemptions, application methods, fees and practical requirements Ecuadorian travelers should know before departure.

Yes. Ecuadorian citizens holding ordinary passports must obtain a Vietnam visa before entering mainland Vietnam. Ecuador is not among the countries covered by Vietnam's general visa-free entry policy for ordinary passport holders. The two important exceptions are the bilateral exemption for specified passport categories and the Phu Quoc visa exemption.

On August 20, 2007, the governments of Vietnam and Ecuador signed an agreement exempting holders of diplomatic, official and special passports from visa requirements. The agreement entered into force on September 19, 2007, and remains in effect.

Visa-free for up to 90 days

Eligible diplomatic or consular mission members and their dependent family members

Under this agreement, eligible diplomatic, official and special passports must have at least six months of remaining validity. An initial visa-free stay of up to 90 days can be extended by no more than another 90 days when the relevant diplomatic mission or consular office submits a written request and the authorities approve it.

The exemption also applies for the duration of their assignment to qualifying members of diplomatic missions and consular offices stationed in the other country. Their spouses and dependent children are included when they hold the specified passport types.

Can Ecuadorian citizens visit Phu Quoc Island without a visa?

Yes. Ecuadorian citizens can visit Phu Quoc Island visa-free for up to 30 days, provided their trip meets the island's special entry conditions. Vietnam introduced the current 30-day arrangement under Decision No. 80/2013/QD-TTg, issued on December 27, 2013, and effective from March 10, 2014.

Unlike the general exemptions granted to selected nationalities, this policy covers foreign passport holders of all nationalities, including Ecuadorians. It is useful for travelers planning an island holiday without visiting other parts of Vietnam.

Before traveling, prepare the following:

  • An Ecuadorian passport valid for at least six months from the date of entry.
  • At least two blank passport pages for immigration stamps.
  • A confirmed itinerary showing a stay on Phu Quoc of no more than 30 days.
  • An onward or return ticket consistent with the permitted stay.
  • Eligibility for admission to Vietnam, without an applicable entry ban.

The Phu Quoc visa exemption does not grant permission to visit Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, or other destinations on the mainland. Even if you travel from Phu Quoc to the mainland by means other than flying-such as by ferry or boat-you are still required to hold a valid visa. Without a valid visa, you would be considered an illegal immigrant and would be unable to check into any hotels.

Vietnam has no resident embassy in Ecuador. Diplomatic representation is handled by the Vietnamese Embassy in Santiago, Chile, which is accredited to Ecuador. Ecuadorian travelers can therefore avoid an overseas consular visit by using an online e-visa application or, for eligible cases, arranging a visa on arrival in advance.

The key difference is when and how the visa is issued: an e-visa is granted electronically before travel, while visa on arrival requires immigration approval before departure and visa collection at the airport.

Vietnam e-visa is the most convenient option for Ecuadorian

The e-visa is the most easy option for most Ecuadorian visitors. Since August 15, 2023, Vietnam has made electronic visas available to citizens of all countries and territories. An e-visa can be issued for a maximum of 90 days and is available for single or multiple entries.

E-visa type

Maximum validity

Government fee

Single-entry

90 days

$25

Multiple-entry

90 days

$50

Choose a single-entry e-visa if you will enter Vietnam once and depart at the end of your trip. Select multiple entries if you plan to leave Vietnam temporarily, such as for a trip to Cambodia or Thailand, and then return during the visa's validity period.

How to apply:

Step 1: Open the official Vietnam e-visa portal.

Step 2: Complete the application form with the personal details shown on your passport.

Step 3: Upload your passport page and portrait photograph.

Step 4: Select single or multiple entry and enter the requested validity dates.

Step 5: Review the application, pay the fee and save your registration code.

Step 6: Use your registration details to check the result. You will receive your e-visa through your registered e-mail. Download and print the approved e-visa for convenient use.

The official processing period is 3-5 working days after a complete application and payment are received. Public holidays, incomplete submissions and requests for corrections can affect the actual time needed. Apply well ahead of your departure date rather than relying on the minimum processing period.

The government application fee is non-refundable if your e-visa is refused. We provide a review of your visa application to determine whether you meet the requirements before you submit your e-visa.

Receive your visa after landing: Vietnam visa on arrival

Visa on arrival (VOA) is a different process. You must obtain an official visa approval letter before boarding your flight to Vietnam. The letter authorizes the designated airport visa procedure; it is not itself a visa and does not replace the final immigration checks. The procedure generally follows two stages:

Before you fly: Arrange immigration approval through an eligible inviting or sponsoring organization, or seek assistance with an appropriate approval-letter application. Prepare your Ecuadorian passport, approval letter, passport photographs, entry-exit form and applicable stamping fee.

At the airport: Present the approval documents at the designated landing-visa counter, submit the required forms, pay the stamping fee and collect your visa before proceeding to passport control.

A visa-on-arrival application can involve a service or sponsorship charge before departure and a separate stamping fee at the airport. Ask for a fee breakdown so you understand both payments. Not every Vietnamese airport issues visas on arrival. VOA must be arranged for a supported international airport and the entry circumstances specified in the approval. Never fly to Vietnam expecting to purchase a visa at the counter without prior approval.

Applying for a Vietnam visa independently can be stressful when your flight is approaching, particularly if this is your first application. A small mistake in a passport number, surname or entry date can lead to additional checks, and an application marked as pending can create problems at airline check-in.

  • Urgent e-visa assistance: Help with an application when departure is approaching.
  • Pending applications: Review of an existing application that has not received a decision.

  • Last-minute travel preparation: Checking documents and identifying possible boarding problems.

Before requesting assistance, have your passport information, application reference (if any), expected arrival date and flight itinerary ready. This allows the support team to assess the issue and explain the available processing options and fees.

Important things Ecuadorian travelers should know before visiting Vietnam

Enter both Ecuadorian surnames correctly

Ecuadorian passports commonly show paternal and maternal surnames. Enter your complete surname and given names in the corresponding e-visa fields, matching the passport's biographical page and machine-readable information.

Do not omit a second surname or rearrange names simply to fit an airline booking format. Before paying, check every character in your name, passport number, date of birth and nationality. Once the visa is issued, compare these details again before leaving Ecuador.

Consider public holidays and the time difference

The official Vietnam visa service may suspend operations during public holidays. Source: Tap chi dien tu thuong hieu va cong luan

Vietnam operates on UTC+7, while mainland Ecuador uses UTC−5, making Vietnam 12 hours ahead of Quito and Guayaquil. The Galapagos Islands use UTC−6, giving them a 13-hour difference from Vietnam.

This matters when contacting support or calculating a working-day processing period. Vietnam's immigration offices observe Vietnamese public holidays, including Tet (Lunar New Year). Submit your application early if your travel dates fall near a holiday or weekend. The Vietnamese Embassy in Chile may also observe closures that affect consular correspondence.

Prepare your pre-arrival immigration information

Vietnam introduced a Pre-arrival Information (PAI) system in 2026 to help international passengers provide information before reaching immigration control. Travelers can complete the online declaration, receive a QR code and save it for inspection at the airport.

Access the official Vietnam pre-arrival declaration website and follow its instructions for your arrival airport. This system does not replace an e-visa, visa approval letter or passport. Keep your entry documents accessible even after completing the declaration.
